September 3: Dictation

He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish. In the first forty days a boy had been with him. But after forty days without a fish the boy’s parents had told him to go to another boat which caught three good fish the first week. It made the boy sad to see the old man come in each day with his skiff.

Dictation (Tuesday, August 27th)

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us.

Dictation: July 2nd

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort. It had a perfectly round door like a porthole, painted green, with a shiny yellow brass knob in the exact middle.

Dictation: June 25th

In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since. “Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.”

Dictation: Tuesday, June 18

ALICE was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank and of having

nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it
had no pictures or conversations in it, "and what is the use of a book," thought Alice,
"without pictures or conversations?"

Dictation: Tuesday, June 11th

Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show. To begin my life with the beginning of my life, I record that I was born, as I have been informed and believe, on a Friday, at twelve o’clock at night. It was remarked that the clock began to strike, and I began to cry, simultaneously.

Dictation: Tuesday, June 4th

It was seven o’clock of a very warm evening in the hills when Father Wolf woke up from his day’s rest, scratched himself, yawned, and spread out his paws one after the other to get rid of the sleepy feeling in their tips. Mother Wolf lay with her big gray nose dropped across her four tumbling, squealing cubs, and the moon shone into the mouth of the cave where they all lived.

Dictation: Tuesday, May 28th

All children, except one, grow up. They soon know that they will grow up, and the way Wendy knew was this. One day when she was two years old she was playing in a garden, and she plucked another flower and ran with it to her mother. I suppose she must have looked rather delightful, for Mrs. Darling put her hand to her heart and cried, "Oh, why can't you remain like this for ever!"

Good luck :)

May 14: Dictation

Next Tuesday we will have a new Dictation:

Matilda starts school late. (Her parents forgot to send her.) Her teacher is Miss Honey, and she is the best teacher in the world. The head teacher is Miss Trunchbull. She is the worst teacher in the world and she hates children!
Miss Trunchbull frightens the children and Miss Honey. But then Matilda discovers something very unusual about herself, and everything changes.
